How to Paint Stucco: A Step-by-Step Guide

Painting stucco can refresh your home’s look and provide long-lasting protection. Follow these steps for a professional finish:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Tools: Extension ladder, paint brushes (various sizes), 3/4-inch to 1-inch roller covers, paint tray or bucket with grid, trowel.
- Materials: Acrylic masonry primer (optional), exterior acrylic latex paint, painter’s tape, stucco patching compound.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Inspect the Stucco
Walk around your home and look for cracks, chips, or peeling paint. Pay special attention to cracks about 1/8 inch or larger and repair them before proceeding. - Test for Alkalinity (if the stucco is new)
Use a pH test kit to check if the stucco is fully cured. If it’s too alkaline, it can burn through the paint. If needed, wait 30-60 days for proper curing. - Pressure Wash the Stucco
Rent a pressure washer and use a cleaning solution safe for stucco. Stand about 3 feet from the surface and clean from top to bottom to remove dirt and impurities. Let it dry thoroughly, which may take up to a full day. - Scrape and Repair
Use a trowel to remove any loose or flaking stucco. Apply a textured stucco patching compound to hairline cracks and missing chunks. Smooth out the edges to ensure they blend with the surface. Let the patching compound cure according to instructions. - Apply Primer (if necessary)
New stucco requires a primer to prevent it from soaking up too much paint. Use an acrylic masonry primer, applying it with a heavy nap roller. Let the primer dry fully before moving to the next step. - Apply Paint
Use a small roller or paintbrush to cut in around windows and doors. For the rest of the surface, use a 3/4-inch to 1-inch roller to apply the acrylic latex paint. Work in small sections, starting at the top and painting down and side to side to cover all areas. If the stucco is rough, apply a second coat or use a paint sprayer. - Maintain the Stucco
Inspect your stucco annually for cracks and clean it as needed using a garden hose or low-pressure washer. Make sure to direct sprinklers away to avoid water stains or damage.
By following these steps, your stucco will have a fresh and durable finish!
