To keep ants out of your hummingbird feeder, here are some effective tips:

What Attracts Ants?

Ants are drawn to sugar water, the same way hummingbirds are. If the feeder leaks or sugar water spills, it’s likely to attract ants. Be cautious about leaving sugary messes, as they can create ant trails to the feeder.

How to Keep Ants Away:

  1. Keep the Feeder Clean: Fix leaks immediately and make sure no sugar water drips from the feeder. Clean the feeder regularly to avoid mold and prevent attracting ants.
  2. Use Ant Moats: Many feeders have built-in ant moats, or you can purchase separate ones. These water-filled barriers prevent ants from reaching the nectar.
  3. Change the Feeder Location: If ants are still a problem, move the feeder to a different spot. Hummingbirds will still find it.

What NOT to Do:

  1. Avoid Pesticides: Never use pesticides, as they can harm hummingbirds and contaminate the nectar.
  2. Don’t Use Sticky Substances: Oils or greases can damage hummingbird feathers and even harm animals that come into contact with them.
  3. Skip Red Dyes: Do not add red dye to your nectar, as it’s harmful to hummingbirds. Stick to using white, granulated sugar.

By following these guidelines, you can keep ants at bay without harming the birds.
