A common issue many people face is stepping out of a hot shower only to be met by a fogged-up bathroom mirror, making it difficult to see clearly while getting ready. This is often a persistent problem, and for a long time, it might seem like something that can’t be prevented.
Various methods have been tried to deal with this—such as blow-drying the condensation off the mirror, wiping it down with a cloth, or even considering installing a new bathroom fan. However, these solutions can take time, and the goal for many is to prevent the fogging in the first place.
The surprising solution? Toothpaste.
How to Prevent Foggy Mirrors With Toothpaste
At first, the idea of using toothpaste to prevent a foggy mirror seems too simple to be effective. Wouldn’t toothpaste make the mirror sticky and cloudy? How much is needed to work? These were the questions that arose, but it turns out that toothpaste really does work.
To try it out, a small amount of toothpaste—about a tablespoon—is applied to a microfiber cloth. The toothpaste is then rubbed onto the mirror, covering one side thoroughly. While the application process can be a bit sticky, once the mirror is covered, a clean cloth is used to wipe the surface, leaving it surprisingly clear. It may not be completely streak-free, but the difference is barely noticeable unless closely inspected.
After applying the toothpaste, a hot shower is taken, leaving the fan off to put the toothpaste’s effectiveness to the test. Once out of the shower, the result is striking: the side of the mirror with the toothpaste remains almost clear, while the other half is fully fogged up. The toothpaste solution works, and it can last for a week or two before reapplication is needed, especially if glass cleaner is used on the mirror.
Other Methods for Preventing Foggy Mirrors
For those who prefer not to use toothpaste, several alternative methods can also prevent a foggy mirror:
- Dish Soap: Despite being associated with washing dishes, dish soap is a versatile cleaner that can be used to prevent fog on mirrors and condensation on windows.
- Shaving Cream: Shaving cream can also be applied to mirrors in the same way as toothpaste to keep them clear of steam. This solution can last up to three weeks if the mirror isn’t cleaned with glass cleaner during that time.
- Anti-Fog Spray: Commercial anti-fog sprays are designed specifically to prevent fog from forming on glass surfaces, providing a convenient and easy solution for those who prefer a ready-made product.
With these methods, foggy bathroom mirrors can be a thing of the past.
